About 640,000 underground storage tanks (USTs) nationwide store petroleum or hazardous substances that can harm the environment and human health if the USTs release their stored contents. USTs that are installed, operated, and maintained properly should not leak, thus avoiding future contamination and cleanup problems. However, leaking USTs can leave considerable cleanup problems.
In New Jersey, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) governs the registration, design, installation, maintenance, and closure of UST systems as well as any investigation and /or remediation required to protect or restore the environment from the impact of hazardous substances. The regulations and requirements for the this environmental topic are detailed in the N.J.A.C. 7:14B Underground Storage of Hazardous Substances (UST)and N.J.A.C. 7:26E Technical Requirements for Site Remediation.
